Why Community Is the Secret to Long-Term Fitness

Walk into almost any gym and you'll see people exercising.

Headphones on.

Workout finished.

Then they're gone.

There's nothing wrong with that.

But over the years, I've realized something that has nothing to do with sets, reps, or nutrition...

The people who stay healthy for years almost always have one thing in common: they belong to a community.

At BMF Training, we believe strength training is the foundation of lifelong health—but community is what makes that training sustainable.

Because getting stronger isn't just about what happens during your workout.

It's about having people who encourage you to keep showing up when life gets busy.

Why I Started BMF Training

I started BMF Training because I saw a disconnect between true strength training and the random bootcamp-style workouts that left people exhausted but not necessarily stronger.

I wanted to educate people on what structured training really looks like.

Training should have a purpose.

Every session should build on the last.

You should know why you're doing each exercise and how it's helping you move toward your goals.

Most importantly, I wanted people to realize that strength training isn't something you do for a few months.

It's something you can enjoy for life.

That's where one of our core beliefs comes from:

Everyone deserves to be an athlete.

Being an athlete doesn't mean competing professionally.

It means having the strength, confidence, and resilience to enjoy life, whether that's hiking with friends, chasing your kids around the park, playing beach volleyball, golfing, or simply carrying groceries without pain.

Coaching Gets You Results. Community Helps You Keep Them.

Great programming matters.

Nutrition matters.

Recovery matters.

But eventually, life gets busy.

Work becomes stressful.

Kids get sick.

Vacations happen.

Schedules change.

That's when community becomes your biggest advantage.

Sometimes the hardest part of training isn't the workout.

It's simply walking through the door.

Having coaches who know your name.

Training partners who ask where you've been.

Members who celebrate your wins.

That makes all the difference.

Fitness Doesn't End When Class Is Over

Some of my favorite moments at BMF don't happen during workouts.

They happen afterward.

We've had members:

  • Grab coffee together after class.

  • Attend each other's weddings.

  • Meet through the gym and become lifelong friends.

  • Play disc golf.

  • Hike local trails.

  • Watch sporting events together.

  • Bring their spouses, friends, and coworkers to train.

  • Support one another through life's ups and downs.

Those moments remind me that we're building something much bigger than stronger athletes.

We're building relationships.

The Moment That Changed My Perspective

One of the biggest shifts for me happened when I started seeing members bring their kids into the gym.

That's when I realized we weren't just helping one person.

We were influencing entire families.

When kids grow up watching their parents prioritize movement, strength, and health, fitness becomes normal—not something they feel they have to "start" later in life.

That realization became even more meaningful after Allie and I welcomed our son, Micah.

Like many parents, our schedule looks very different than it did a few years ago.

We don't train exactly the way we used to.

But that's okay.

Our goal isn't to train the most.

It's to train consistently.

We want Micah to grow up seeing that taking care of your health is simply part of life—just like brushing your teeth or eating dinner together.

Sometimes People Need Support More Than They Need a Workout

One story that has stayed with me involved a member who suddenly stopped coming to class.

Instead of assuming she had lost interest, we reached out to check in.

She was going through a difficult season in her life.

When she returned, we didn't ask her to chase personal records.

We didn't push her harder.

Our only goal was to help her move again.

To get her out of the house.

To remind her she wasn't alone.

Over time, she started feeling better—not just physically, but mentally.

That experience reminded me that coaching isn't just about helping someone squat more weight.

Sometimes it's simply about showing people that someone genuinely cares.

Why People Quit the Gym

I don't think most people quit because they're lazy.

I think they quit because they expect results to happen immediately.

We live in a world of instant gratification.

If the scale doesn't move after two weeks...

If they aren't noticeably stronger after a month...

They assume the program isn't working.

Real progress doesn't happen overnight.

It happens through hundreds of small decisions.

One workout.

One meal.

One walk.

One good night's sleep.

Repeated over and over again.

And it's much easier to stay patient when you have people around you reminding you why you started.

Our Vision for the Future

As we prepare to move into our new facility, I've spent a lot of time thinking about what I want people to feel when they walk through our doors.

Yes, I want them to get stronger.

Yes, I want them to improve their body composition.

Yes, I want them to reach goals they never thought were possible.

But more than anything...

I want them to feel welcomed.

Encouraged.

Supported.

Challenged.

I want BMF Training to be known as the place where expert coaches genuinely care about every member's success.

A place where people are excited to train because they know someone is in their corner.

That's the kind of community we're working to build.

Strength Is Better When It's Shared

The strongest communities aren't built overnight.

They're built one workout...

One conversation...

One high-five...

One friendship...

One family at a time.

That's why we'll always believe that coaching is about more than writing workouts.

It's about helping people become healthier, stronger, and more confident together.

Because when fitness becomes something your family enjoys, your friends support, and your community celebrates...

It stops feeling like another task on your to-do list.

It simply becomes part of who you are.
